The “Exploring Nature’s Connections” educational series will highlight the animal and plant species you might encounter while wandering Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. The name honors the time Rachel Carson spent with her grandnephew (adoptive son), Roger Christie, on Southport Island in the 1950’s and early 1960’s, exploring the tidal pools and wooded trails of the Maine coast. Rachel Carson instilled in Roger "a general respect for the natural world, and a sense of the connections between things that aren't obviously apparent," which he reflected upon in an interview with Susan Johns at the Boothbay Register in 2012. Our post each address one species, the conservation status of that species and some facts we hope you’ll find fascinating. Click on the picture to find out more!
